M I N U T E S
A meeting of the Board of School Trustees of the Vigo County School Corporation was held at the Vigo County School Corporation Administration Building, 686 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana on Monday, March 13, 2009 at 7:00 P.M.
The following Board Members were present: Mr. Mel Burks, Mrs. Jackie Lower, Mr. Guille Cox,
Dr. Joseph Minnis, Mr. Paul Lockhart, and Ms. Alpa Patel. Mr. Tom Thomas was unable to attend the meeting this evening because of a prior commitment made before his installation.
Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Mel Burks.
Resolution of Memoriam
Ms. Patel presented a Resolution of Memoriam for the following two former Vigo County School Corporation employees:
1. Ms. Tonya Edwardson, former Mathematics Teacher at Terre Haute North Vigo High School and West Vigo High School, and Art Teacher at West Vigo High School.
2. Mr. Gerald Evola, former Vocational Drafting Teacher at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.
Spotlight
Ms. Stacy Mason, Principal at Terre Haute North Vigo High School, introduced Terre Haute North Vigo Junior, Amanda Ramsey, who was honored for her quick response and commitment to protecting others.

Consent Agenda
Mr. Burks moved for approval of the Consent Agenda. Mrs. Lower seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
The following Consent Agenda items were approved:

New Business
Personnel Report
Mr. Tanoos presented the personnel Report for Board approval.
Mrs. Lower moved for approval. Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Animals in the
School and School Events Policy ING
Mr. Klippel presented the proposed Policy ING, Animals in the School and School Events for third reading.
Mrs. Lower suggested adding the word program to number 11 of the proposed policy. The policy would then read as follows:
11. Unless the animal is part of a specific activity or program, it should remain in its cage or container.
Mr. Cox moved for approval with the above noted change. Mr. Burks seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Whee! Buddy Grant Lost Creek Elementary School
Mr. Tanoos requested permission for a Whee! Buddy Grant for Lost Creek Elementary School sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education. The grant amount is $600.00, and the grant period will extend from April 1, 2009 through June 30 2010.
Mrs. Lower moved for approval. Mr. Cox seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Citizen Comments
Comments were received from Dr. Muriel Ryan in regard to several programs taking place in the near future regarding Homeless/Poverty, Human Rights Day, and a program presented by the Department of Social Works at Indiana State University entitled The Poverty Game.

Information and
Proposals from Board Members and Superintendent Tanoos
Mr. Cox commented that with our depression, there will be more homeless, and many of these people do not know about poverty and survival techniques.
Mr. Tanoos stated that there are approximately 150 students classified as homeless in the Vigo County School Corporation.
Ms. Patel thanked Dr. Ryan for her involvement in the homeless/poverty issues, as well as the Human Rights Day.
Mrs. Lower asked for confirmation on the last day of school this year, as well as graduation dates.
Mr. Tanoos responded that the last day of school is June 5th and reviewed graduation dates of the high schools.
Mrs. Lower noted that she attended a luncheon meeting in Indianapolis on Choice Schools, and brought back packets for all of the Board members.
Mr. Tanoos stated that Doug Tischbein, Energy Systems Group, reported that the chiller has been placed in West Vigo high School and will be ready for graduation.
Dr. Minnis commented that the Swearing-In Ceremony has been held for our new Board Member, Mr. Tom Thomas.
