M I N U T E S

 

 

A meeting of the Board of School Trustees of the Vigo County School Corporation was held at the Vigo County School Corporation Administration Building, 686 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana on February 26, 2007 at 7:00 P.M.

 

The following Board Members were present:  Ms. Alpa Patel, Mr. Mel Burks, Mr. Gene Shike, Mrs. Jackie Lower, Mr. Guille Cox, Dr. Joseph Minnis, and Mr. Paul Lockhart.

 

Pledge of Allegiance

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Guille Cox.

 

Resolution of Memoriam

 

Mr. Gene Shike presented a Resolution of Memoriam for Mrs. Peggy Roloff former Administrative Secretary and Deputy Treasurer in the Administration Building Business Office.

 

First Call for Citizens Comments

 

No comments were received.

 

Consent Agenda

 

Mr. Burks moved for approval of the Consent Agenda.  Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

Discussion

 

Artificial Turf

 

Considerable discussion by coaches, patrons, players and staff has taken place for a number of years concerning the football fields at all three Vigo County School Corporation schools.  Mr. Brian Dorsett, area businessman, a graduate of one of our high schools, and a parent of a football player shared his research on artificial turf.

 

Following discussion, Mr. Tanoos said he would ask Mr. Lisby to chair a committee that would look at artificial turf possibilities and bring a report back to the Board.

 

Discussion/Action

 

Air Conditioning – Locker Room Renovation – Terre Haute North and South Vigo

 

Mr. Lisby noted that there is a need to provide air conditioning for locker room areas at Terre Haute North and South Vigo High Schools.  He recommended that we engage in the process to provide air conditioning for the locker rooms at those schools, which would include all locker rooms in the areas adjacent to the main gymnasium, for both boys and girls.  He noted that the locker rooms at West Vigo High School are already air-conditioned.

 

Following discussion, Mr. Cox moved for approval.  Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

New Business

 

Personnel Report

 

Mr. Shike moved for approval of the Personnel Report.  Dr. Minnis seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

Former Sandison School Property

 

Mr. Tanoos stated that Mr. Bauer has provided a Quit Claim Deed from the Vigo County School Corporation to the Light House Mission to clear up a title defect resulting when this particular property was conveyed to the Vigo County Commissioners in 1977.

 

Dr. Minnis moved for approval.  Mr. Burks seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 


Purchase of Xerographic Paper

 

Mr. Tanoos reported that bids were received and opened on January 31, 2007 for the purchase of Xerographic paper, and recommended that a contract be awarded to The Paper Corporation in the amount of $131,084.50.  He also recommended that all other bids be rejected.

 

Mr. Burks moved for approval.  Ms. Patel seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

Masonry Work at Various Locations

 

Mr. Tanoos reported that bids were received and opened on February 8, 2007 for the bids of 2007 Roofing & Masonry Work at various locations.  He recommended that contracts be awarded as follows:

 

            a.            Associated Roofing Professionals, Inc.  -  $1,031,669

 

                        For Project R-1, Alternate R-1-B, Alternate R-1-C,

                        Project R-2, Alternate R-2-B, Project R-3, Project R-4,

                        and Alternate R-4-A.

 

Mr. Burks moved for approval.  Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

Comments/Correspondence/Information

 

Information from Superintendent Tanoos

 

Mr. Tanoos reviewed activities that took place during the past two weeks in the Vigo County School Corporation, and noted that we had another tragic loss of a recent graduate.  Mr. Tanoos announced that the Basketball Jamboree, with all money going to the Mental Health Association, would be held Wednesday, March 28th at North Vigo High School.

 

Second Call for Citizens Comments

 

Comments were received from Mrs. Meg Merrill.

 

Information and Proposals from Board Members

 

Dr. Minnis asked that Substitute Pay be placed on the agenda for the next meeting.  He noted that he would like to have $65.00 and $85.00 as the two price points as a minimum increase.  Mr. Tanoos suggested that the administration make a presentation costing out the $65.00 and $85.00 at the next meeting before the vote.

 

Mrs. Lower thanked Rick Stevens for inviting the Board to attend a showing of Freedom Writers last week.

 

Mrs. Lower announced that there would be a Blue Ribbon Committee meeting Tuesday, March 27th at 5:30 at the Administration Building.

 

Dr. Minnis invited Board Members to attend the Kiwanis Club meeting Thursday, March 29th at Lost Creek Elementary School.  The meeting will involve the Reading Recovery Program.

 

Ms. Patel asked that the Board review a letter she drafted to be sent to the newspapers in support for fully funded full day kindergarten in Indiana and Vigo County starting with the 2007 school year.

 

Following considerable discussion regarding wording and length of the letter, Ms. Patel moved to send a letter from the entire Board to the newspapers in Terre Haute and Indianapolis in support of fully funded all day kindergarten in Indiana and Terre Haute beginning with the 2007-2008 school year.  Mr. Shike seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.
